Wishbone’s Legacy Lives On: New Documentary Supports Children’s Literacy Through Reading Is Fundamental

For many children growing up in the 1990s, Wishbone was more than a television show. The beloved Jack Russell Terrier introduced young audiences to classic literature through imaginative adventures that made reading exciting, accessible, and fun.

Now, as Wishbone celebrates its 30th anniversary, a new documentary is bringing the story behind the iconic series to a new generation while supporting an important cause. The filmmakers behind What’s the Story, Wishbone? have announced that 10% of net proceeds from the documentary’s global digital release will be donated to Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), helping more children discover the joy and power of reading.

A Documentary That Celebrates the Power of Stories

Directed by Joey Stewart, What’s the Story, Wishbone? offers a behind-the-scenes look at the award-winning PBS series that transformed classic literature into must-watch television for millions of children. The documentary features interviews with the show's creators, writers, cast members, and the voice of Wishbone himself, Larry Brantley. It also includes rare archival footage and reflections on the show's lasting cultural impact.

Originally airing in the mid-1990s, Wishbone introduced young audiences to literary classics such as The Odyssey, Sherlock Holmes, and Joan of Arc through the adventures of a curious and imaginative dog. By blending storytelling, humor, and education, the series helped countless children see reading as an adventure rather than an assignment.

Today, that same spirit of literacy and imagination continues through this partnership with Reading Is Fundamental.

Why This Donation Matters

While Wishbone helped inspire a generation of readers, the need to support children's literacy remains as urgent as ever.

Millions of children in the United States are still struggling to read proficiently, and access to books remains one of the most significant factors influencing reading success. Research consistently shows that when children have books in their homes, they are more likely to develop stronger literacy skills, achieve higher academic outcomes, and build confidence as readers.

The donation from What’s the Story, Wishbone? will help Reading Is Fundamental continue its mission of ensuring that every child has access to the books and reading resources they need to thrive. As RIF President and CEO Alicia Levi shared, “Together, we're celebrating how stories spark imagination, foster a love of reading, and open doors to possibility for children everywhere."

How Reading Is Fundamental Helps Children Become Lifelong Readers

For more than 60 years, Reading Is Fundamental has worked to create a nation of lifelong readers by inspiring the joy of reading and helping children build the skills they need for success. As the nation's leading children's literacy nonprofit, RIF has provided nearly 430 million books and reading resources to more than 237 million children since 1966.

Providing Access to Books

At the heart of RIF's work is a simple but powerful idea: every child deserves access to books.

Through programs that distribute free books and literacy resources, RIF helps children build home libraries and develop positive reading habits. These efforts are especially important in communities where families may have limited access to books.

Supporting Families and Educators

RIF also offers free, research-based resources for families, educators, and caregivers. From read-aloud activities and classroom lessons to literacy tips and digital reading experiences, these resources help adults support children's reading development both in school and at home.

Inspiring a Love of Reading

Beyond building literacy skills, RIF focuses on helping children discover the joy of reading. When children have opportunities to choose books that reflect their interests, identities, and experiences, they are more likely to engage with reading and continue reading throughout their lives.

Continuing Wishbone’s Literacy Legacy

The success of Wishbone demonstrated something that educators and literacy advocates have long understood: stories have the power to inspire curiosity, build knowledge, and create lifelong readers.

Thirty years later, What’s the Story, Wishbone? reminds us of the enduring impact that meaningful storytelling can have on children's lives. Through its donation to Reading Is Fundamental, the documentary is helping ensure that today's children have the same opportunity to discover the excitement, imagination, and possibilities that reading can unlock.

As audiences revisit the adventures of one of television's most beloved literary heroes, they can also help support the next generation of readers, continuing a literacy legacy that began with one small dog and a very big imagination.
