The Lobster Lady

Virginia Oliver was over 100 years old—105 to be specific. And she was still out on the water catching lobsters! People all over Maine admired her, and locals lovingly called her the “Lobster Lady.” Virginia grew up in Rockland, Maine, and she hauled lobster traps for more than 93 years.

The Lobster Lady follows Virginia through a day in her busy life. As she works, she remembers what it was like growing up on the mainland and spending time on her family’s island, called the Neck. Readers get to see what Virginia’s life was like and learn all about the hard work and care that go into harvesting lobsters. The Lobster Lady lived to be 105, and died in January 2026.
