Jamar and Tamira put their clothes away in the drawers. They turned on the giant TV. They jumped on the big, fluffy bed. “Hotels are so much fun!” said Jamar.
“I wish we could stay here forever,” said Tamira.
Jamar asked their dad if they could go exploring. “Sure,” he said. He handed them a bucket. “You can find the ice maker and fill this up.”
“Yay!” they shouted. Their room was great, but they couldn’t wait to see the rest of the hotel. They shut the door and went down the hall. The carpet was think and cushiony under their feet.
“Let’s ride the elevator,” suggested Tamira.
“Ooh, yeah!” said Jamar. “We can go down to the lobby and see the pool.”
They pushed the down button and soon the elevator arrived. When they stepped inside, they felt a cool breeze. That was their first sign. “What’s that?” asked Tamira.
“I guess it’s just a draft,” said Jamar. He pushed the L button. But instead of going down toward the lobby, the elevator started to go up toward the roof.
Tamira pushed more buttons. The elevator continued to rise.
“Maybe there’s something awesome on the roof,” said Jamar.
But when the elevator stopped and the doors opened, there was nothing there. Jamar and Tamira stepped out. They quickly wished they hadn’t. Not only was there nothing to see on the roof, but as soon as they got out of the elevator, it vanished. Now what would they do?
"It’s really cold up here,” said Tamira.
“Yep,” said Jamar. “And I hear footsteps!”
Jamar and Tamira ran away from the sound of the footsteps. They reached the edge of the roof. There were outside stairs leading down.
“I don’t think those were there before,” said Tamira. “Do you think something’s coming up?”
“I don’t know,” said Jamar. “But there’s something already up here and I don’t want to meet it!”
Jamar and Tamira thundered down the stairs. They got to the lobby.
“Hello,” said the person at the front desk. “I see you’ve met our resident ghost.”
Jamar and Tamira looked at each other. “Ghost?” they said.
“I think we want to go back to our room,” said Tamira. But when they turned to go back up the outside stairs, they were gone.
“You can take the elevator,” said the person at the front desk.
“No thanks!” said Jamar and Tamira together. They found the regular staircase and started climbing. “What will Dad say when we come back without ice?” asked Jamar.
Tamira looked down. The ice bucket was full. “I guess we’ll never know,” she said.
"Thanks, ghost,” said Jamar. “Maybe you’re not so bad after all!”
