Let Sleeping Dads Lie

Dad was sleeping on the couch. But Jake and Jenny wanted to play with him. “Should we wake him up?” asked Jake.

             “Yes!” said Jenny. “But how?”

“Let’s tickle his feet,” said Jake.

They grabbed the back scratcher and reached toward Dad’s toes. “Tickle tickle!” said Jenny. She scratched his foot.

Dad let out a giant snore. “Shhhhrumph!” But he didn’t wake up.

"Ooh!” said Jenny. “I have an idea. Let’s put Tuxedo on his belly!”

Jake picked up the cat. He placed it on top of Dad. The cat leapt up and jumped off Dad’s stomach onto the floor. Dad rolled over. But he didn’t wake up.

Jake got out his rubber spider. He tied one leg to a piece of string. He handed it to Jenny. She lowered it down near Dad’s face.

Dad let out another big snore. “Shhhrumph!” The spider swung wildly. Jenny lowered it some more until it touched the top of Dad’s nose. Dad swatted it away. But he still didn’t wake up!

“What about Rusty?” suggested Jenny. The dog barked on command. Jake held out a treat.

“Bark!” he said. Rusty did. But Dad didn’t wake up.

             “I give up,” said Jake.

“Me too,” said Jenny. “Let’s take a nap instead.”  They curled up next to Dad. Soon they were all snoring.

Later, Dad woke up and made dinner. “Jake, Jenny,” he called. “Dinner is ready!” There was no answer. Jake and Jenny were still asleep.  Dad eyed the back scratcher. “Hmm,” he said. And then he smiled. He knew just what to do.
