Lots of artists start painting when they are young. Not Grandma Moses! She didn’t paint until she was 76. She had a late start. But she still became famous all around the world.

Grandma Moses was born in 1860. Her name was Anna Mary Robertson. She grew up in New York.

Anna went to school until she was 12. Then she got a job to help her family. She married Thomas Moses when she was 27 years old.

Anna and Thomas lived on a farm. When Thomas died, Anna kept farming. She retired when she was 76.

After she retired, Anna started to make art. She liked to make pictures with a needle and thread. But she got arthritis in her hands. That made them hurt. Holding a needle was too hard. So she started painting instead.

Anna painted pictures of life on the farm. People liked her paintings. In 1940, some of her paintings went on display in New York City. She was 80 years old.

After that, Anna became famous. People called her Grandma Moses because of her age. Her paintings sold all over the world.

Anna made over 2,000 paintings. Some of the titles were Black Horses, Making Apple Butter, and From My Window. She lived to be 101. She showed people that it’s never to late to make art!
