The New Babysitter

Daphne and Oliver couldn’t wait for Aimee to arrive. She was their favorite babysitter. She played fun games and let them eat in the living room. “When will Aimee be here?” Daphne asked.

Mom was putting on her earrings to go out. “Oh, Aimee’s not coming,” she said. “She had other plans. So we hired a new babysitter for tonight.”

“Who?” the twin brother and sister shouted.

“Her name is Luna,” said Mom. “She’s very nice. I’m sure you’ll like her.”

The twins were still grumpy when Luna arrived. But they cheered up after awhile. Luna wasn’t so bad. They liked her because she was willing to play Monopoly. And she let them eat chips on the sofa.

Daphne and Oliver wanted to play outside before dinner. Luna said yes. They all went into the backyard and took turns on the tire swing.

Soon the sun started to set. “Let’s go inside and order the pizza,” said Luna.

“Can’t we stay out just a little bit longer?” asked Oliver. “I haven’t had my third turn yet.”

Luna looked nervous. She glanced at the sky. It was full of clouds.

Oliver climbed on the tire swing. Daphne gave him a push. Just then, the clouds parted and a full moon shone in the sky.

“Where is Luna?” asked Daphne. Oliver shrugged. The new babysitter had disappeared.

They heard a noise. It sounded like a howl. And it was coming from the bushes right next to them.

“W-what was that?” asked Daphne. Her voice was trembling.

“I don’t know,” said Oliver. He was shaking too.

The howl came again. It was even louder now.

“Luna, help!” the twins shouted. But Luna was not there. Instead, a giant wolf leapt out from behind the bushes.

“Run!” shouted Daphne.

They ran into the house. Oliver slammed the door. They fell in a heap on the carpet. “Luna,” they whispered. “She’s the wolf!”

“Did I hear my name?” asked a voice. It was Luna. She was sitting on the sofa. “Want to order the pizza now?”

The twins looked at each other. Maybe they were wrong. Maybe Luna had been inside the whole time. Maybe she was not a werewolf. But then she smiled. And they saw her pointed teeth.
