Amelia Earhart was born in 1897. She became a famous airplane pilot. She was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean alone. She helped other women become pilots. She did this at a time when mostly men flew planes.

Eleanor Roosevelt was born in 1884. She became a First Lady. That means she was married to the President. But Eleanor was famous for helping people. Not for being someone’s wife.

In those days, women didn’t have the same rights as men. Women were considered weaker than men. Amelia and Eleanor knew that wasn’t true. They knew that women could do anything. They followed their hearts. They did what they thought was right.

Amelia met Eleanor in 1933 when Amelia went to the White House for dinner. They became good friends. They had a lot of the same ideas. They were both strong women. They both fought for women’s rights.

Eleanor asked Amelia what it was like to fly at night. Back then, it was very dangerous to fly at night. It was hard to see where you were going. Amelia said it was like flying with the stars. Eleanor wanted to try it. So they went to the airport. They got a plane. They flew around at night. Eleanor loved it.

Eleanor wanted to learn to fly a plane. Amelia said she would teach her. But she never got the chance. Amelia disappeared in 1937. She was flying an airplane. She tried to fly around the world non-stop. But her plane crashed in the ocean.

The U.S. Navy searched for Amelia. But she was never found. After that, Eleanor never learned to fly. She also never forgot her good friend.
