One of the most famous pairs of friends in children’s books are Wilbur and Charlotte. Have you ever read about them? They are the main characters in E.B. White’s story called Charlotte’s Web.
Wilbur is a pig. A girl named Fern adopts him. Eventually he grows too big to live with Fern’s family. So he goes to live on a farm.
In his pen on the farm, Wilbur meets Charlotte. Charlotte is a spider. Some people think of spiders as scary or gross, but Charlotte is very kind.
When Wilbur finds out that pigs usually become dinner, Charlotte tries to comfort him. She weaves words into her web to cheer him up. Wilbur says, “It is not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer.”
Wilbur appreciates Charlotte’s kindness. And Charlotte appreciates Wilbur’s cheerfulness. They are both loyal and caring.
Charlotte wants to help Wilbur feel better about his fate. But she also wants to save him. She continues to write words in her web to tell everyone how wonderful Wilbur is. She calls him four different things, including “some pig” and “terrific.”
Does Charlotte’s plan work? Does Wilbur get eaten? What does Charlotte do next? If you want to find out what happens to these two friends, you’ll have to read the book!
